The 7 Chakras: What They Mean and How to Balance Them

Your body is more than muscle and bone. Running through you is a river of energy, and along that river sit seven sacred centers called chakras. The word chakra means “wheel” in Sanskrit, and that is exactly what they are: spinning wheels of energy that govern how you feel, love, create, speak, and connect to something greater than yourself.
When your chakras are balanced, energy flows freely and life feels aligned. When one is blocked or overactive, you feel it, in your body, your emotions, and your spirit.
This guide walks you through all seven. Not sure where your energy is flowing today? Take our Find Your Chakra Balance quiz first, then come back here to go deeper.

  1. Root Chakra — Muladhara 🔴
    Color: Red
    Location: Base of the spine
    Element: Earth
The Root Chakra is your foundation. It governs your sense of safety, stability, and belonging. This is the energy that says, “I am here, I am supported, I have what I need.” When your roots are strong, you feel grounded and secure no matter what storms pass through your life.
Signs it’s balanced: You feel safe in your body and your life. You trust that your needs will be met. You feel present, steady, and at home in the world.
Signs it’s blocked: Anxiety, fear, and worry about survival or money. Feeling ungrounded, restless, or disconnected from your body. Difficulty feeling safe even when nothing is wrong.
    How to balance it:
Spend time in nature and walk barefoot on the earth
Eat grounding foods, especially root vegetables
Use red stones like garnet, red jasper, or hematite
Practice grounding meditation, imagining roots growing from your body into the earth
Affirmation: I am safe. I am grounded. I belong here.
  2. Sacral Chakra — Svadhisthana 🟠
    Color: Orange
Location: Lower abdomen, below the navel
    Element: Water
The Sacral Chakra is the seat of your emotions, creativity, and pleasure. It governs your ability to feel deeply, create freely, and experience joy without guilt. This is the flowing, watery energy of passion and play.
Signs it’s balanced: You feel your emotions fully and express them in healthy ways. You are creative, passionate, and able to enjoy pleasure. You embrace change and go with the flow.
Signs it’s blocked: Emotional numbness or overwhelm. Creative blocks. Guilt around pleasure or joy. Feeling stuck, rigid, or cut off from your passions.
    How to balance it:
Move your body freely through dance, swimming, or hip-opening stretches
Create something with no goal but joy
Use orange stones like carnelian or orange calcite
    Spend time near water
Affirmation: I allow myself to feel. I honor my creativity. Joy is my birthright.
  3. Solar Plexus Chakra — Manipura 🟡
    Color: Yellow
    Location: Upper abdomen, stomach area
    Element: Fire
The Solar Plexus is your inner fire, the center of your personal power, confidence, and will. It governs your sense of self and your ability to stand in your worth, make decisions, and honor your boundaries.
Signs it’s balanced: You feel confident and capable. You trust your decisions. You hold healthy boundaries and stand in your power without needing to control others.
Signs it’s blocked: Low self-esteem, self-doubt, or feeling powerless. On the other hand, an overactive Solar Plexus can show up as control, anger, or the need to dominate.
    How to balance it:
Set and honor one boundary this week, however small
Move your body in ways that build strength
    Spend time in the sunlight
Use yellow stones like citrine or tiger’s eye
Affirmation: I am powerful. I trust myself. My worth is not up for debate.
  4. Heart Chakra — Anahata 💚
    Color: Green
    Location: Center of the chest

The Heart Chakra is the bridge between the lower, earthly chakras and the higher, spiritual ones. It governs love, compassion, forgiveness, and connection, both to others and to yourself.
Signs it’s balanced: You give and receive love freely. You forgive, you feel compassion, and you hold as much tenderness for yourself as you do for others.
Signs it’s blocked: Difficulty trusting or opening up. Holding grudges. Feeling unworthy of love. Being overly giving to others while neglecting yourself.
    How to balance it:
Practice self-compassion, speaking to yourself as you would a dear friend
Give and receive love consciously, through a hug, a kind word, an open moment
    Spend time doing gentle breathwork
Use green or pink stones like rose quartz or green aventurine
Affirmation: I am worthy of love. I give and receive with an open heart.

    Bringing It All Together
Your chakras are not meant to be perfect. They are living, shifting centers of energy that move with your life. Some days your Heart will be wide open. Other days your Root will need tending. This is not failure. This is being human.
The goal is not perfection, it is awareness. When you know where your energy is flowing and where it is calling for attention, you can meet yourself with compassion and gentle care.
